A dental bridge is a dental prosthetic work designed to replace one, two or more missing teeth in a row. It consists of tooth crowns that are firmly connected to form a unit.

It can be attached to the surrounding natural teeth or to dental implants if several teeth in a row are missing.

What is the purpose of a dental bridge?

Your teeth are part of the whole. If a tooth is missing, neighbouring teeth can be displaced into the empty space. The teeth in your opposing jaw (upper or lower) may also move up or down towards the empty space. This can cause the following things:

  • Bite problems.
  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Pain from uneven pressure on teeth and jaws.
  • Dissatisfaction and distress with appearance and/or smiling.

A typical dental bridge has:

  • Wearable crowns: the dentist puts two crowns on the teeth next to the missing tooth. These attachment teeth or supporting teeth can be your natural teeth or dental implants.
  • Center Crown: This “false tooth” (or teeth) fills the gap and is attached to the supporting crowns.

A dental bridge is placed on existing healthy teeth, which serves as a “support”. Other links in the bridge complete the missing teeth. Today, thanks to advances in almost every field of dentistry, especially the development and improvement of technology in dentistry, all prosthetic work is faster, more precise and of much higher quality.

Procedure of placing a dental bridge

1

PREPARATION OF THE SUPPORTING TEETH

During your first visit, your dentist will grind down the teeth on which the bridge will be placed. Some of the enamel and dentin is removed to make room for the crown. Sometimes additional interventions are required for caries or treatment of the tooth root.

2

IMPRESSION

The dentist takes impressions or creates a 3D digital scan of your mouth and teeth. An impression is taken of the ground teeth using an intraoral camera (scanner), which takes hundreds of small photos and uses software to stitch them together to form an image of the patient’s mouth. The procedure is much more comfortable and faster than classic impressions with silicone materials.

The digital impression is sent to the dental laboratory, where our technicians design the teeth on a virtual model based on the situation before grinding, the patient’s photos and the wishes of the patient and the doctor.

3

INSERTION OF THE TEMPORARY BRIDGE

You will be given a temporary bridge to protect the exposed areas of your mouth until the dental lab makes the permanent bridge. This allows you to function normally until a permanent fix is installed.

4

CREATING THE PERMANENT BRIDGE

The dental lab uses an impression or scan as a model to create your bridge. At the Smile Clinic we manufacture dental bridges using the latest CAD-CAM technology.

5

CEMENTATION OF THE BRIDGE

At the next visit, the dentist will remove the temporary bridge and place the permanent bridge. He will carefully examine the bridge and make any necessary adjustments so that it fits you perfectly.

Different types of dental bridges

This dental bridge is the most commonly used option. It has two bearing crowns and a central crown. The bearing crowns hold the bridge in place and avoid displacement. Conventional bridges are made of metal-ceramic, zirconium-ceramic or glass-ceramic.

With this type of bridge, the central crown is connected to just one supporting crown. This can sometimes be an option for people who only have teeth on one side of the tooth being replaced.

This bridge is similar to a “traditional fixed bridge” but instead of attaching it to natural teeth, we attach it to implants.

Durability and care of the dental bridge

The durability of work such as dental crowns, bridges or dental implants depends on several factors. Dental bridges should last at least five to seven years. With good oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning at the dentist, a dental bridge can last longer than 10 years.

Dental bridge cost

The cost of a dental bridge can vary depending on the type of bridge and the material it is made of. In the Smile Clinic, the price of a dental bridge starts at € 557.00 for a traditional bridge, which is attached to natural teeth and is made of high-quality zirconium ceramics from the renowned manufacturer Ivoclar Vivadent.

FAQ about dental bridges

Dental bridges can help you if you are missing one or more teeth. The most common causes of tooth loss are caries, gum disease and injury. There are also people who are born with missing teeth due to a congenital disease.

In order for a dental bridge to be placed, you need healthy teeth right next to the missing teeth.

Today, at Smile Polyclinic, we most often use metal-free oxide ceramics (zirconium oxide) for the production of crowns and bridges.

Modern dentistry tries to avoid the use of metal-based materials as much as possible. Metal-free crowns (zirconium crowns) can be used for both front and side teeth. They are characterized by exceptional strength but also superior aesthetics as they allow for the transparency and natural appearance of the teeth.

Zirconium crowns are the optimal solution today because they represent an ideal combination of functionality and aesthetics.

Dental bridges should last at least five to seven years. With good oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning at the dentist, the bridge can last longer than 10 years.

In the Smile Clinic, the price of a dental bridge starts at HRK 6,000.00 for a traditional bridge, which is attached to natural teeth and is made of high-quality zirconium ceramics from the renowned manufacturer Ivoclar Vivadent.

No, quite the opposite, because replacing missing teeth makes eating easier. You may initially only prefer small, chopped soft foods until you get used to the bridge.

When your front teeth are missing, it can be difficult to speak clearly and understandably. A dental bridge with the front teeth in the right place can improve your pronunciation.

Some patients choose partial dentures, which are mobile prosthetic works. You can take them out of your mouth to clean them. You could also be a candidate for a dental implant.

An implant is a screw that is surgically placed in your jaw and onto which a tooth crown is placed. Your dentist can help you figure out which option is best for you.

Sometimes your dentist will recommend a dental implant instead of a traditional bridge. The dental laboratory makes prosthetic work based on the impression of your mouth. An oral surgeon places an implant in your jaw. After a certain time, the implants are fused with the jawbone and crowns are placed on them.

The advantage of implants is that they don’t need support from other teeth and you get the appearance and function of a natural tooth. In addition, dental implants can last a lifetime, while a dental bridge will need to be replaced over time (after 10-15 years).

If you take proper care of your bridge, it can last for many years without complications. A bridge can be damaged if the surrounding teeth decay or the cement loosens. If the bridge becomes loose and the supporting teeth are still healthy and intact, your doctor can reattach them with new cement.

The durability of the dental bridge depends on the health and strength of the remaining teeth. With a bridge, it is particularly important to prevent caries and gum disease, which can lead to the loss of supporting teeth. For proper care of your teeth, gums, and dental bridge, follow the guidelines below:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily: Your dentist can show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth. You will likely use a special type of dental floss that can be threaded between the bridge and the gums.
  • Have regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings: Regular visits to the dentist can help identify problems early, allowing for timely and more successful treatment.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and fibre, and try to limit foods that require a lot of chewing, such as: B. some meats.
