Digital dentistry involves the use of dental technology and equipment that uses computerized or digital components. Computer-aided technology enables dental practices to further improve patient care. First and foremost, digital dentistry eliminates the manual steps of dental procedures.
Because of this, dentists can provide an efficient and more automated treatment process.
How is digital dentistry used?
Digital dentistry encompasses any digital or computer-assisted technology that your dentist can use to examine, diagnose, and treat your oral health. With digital dentistry, we are transforming almost every aspect of professional oral care, from the moment you book your appointment to the moment our dentists assess your oral health, diagnose and treat your condition or disease.
We “digitalized” our practices a long time ago, so we have all the top-of-the-line equipment and technology. Thus, in our digital dental clinic, traditional dental problems are solved in a contemporary and modern way.
Digital dentistry and technology at Smile Polyclinic
Within our digital dental clinic there is a fully equipped, modern CAD-CAM dental laboratory, which allows patients to have an individual approach to solving dental problems. Thanks to constant education and training, our laboratory is managed by experienced dental technicians. With great care and precision, they ensure high-quality work and thus satisfied patients.
Another great advantage is that our digital dental clinic has its own dental laboratory (dental laboratory). This enables much faster and better collaboration for both the patient and our team. Numerous small details can be corrected directly on site in cooperation with our top dental technicians. For the patient, this means security and control over every stage of therapy without having to go to other locations for the necessary imaging. We can proudly say that we are among the best clinics for implantology, oral surgery and peri-implantitis treatment thanks to strict compliance with the highest standards and regulations.
Our dental laboratory is equipped with the most modern technologies and systems, specialized in the most complex surgical interventions and complete functional-aesthetic rehabilitation. Through continuous work together, investments in digital infrastructure and continuous training of our experts, we can offer our patients the best approach and solution to their dental problems.
Within the framework of CAD-CAM technology in our polyclinic we use various tools and components:
- Scanner: also known as a digitizing tool, with which we scan your teeth and transfer the image to the computer for further processing
- CAD Software: used to edit images of your teeth and plan custom dental prosthetic work. We also use this software to give you a preview of the expected results after therapy
- CAM device:is used to transform the images of your teeth into a real restoration with the help of a 3D print.
Thanks to CGI – computer aided implantology – the installation of Straumann implants at Smile Polyclinic is minimally invasive and allows for maximum precision of implant placement.
CGI technology assists our experts and enables them to use an intraoral scan to find the most precise and efficient way to place implants in your specific jawbone structure.
We achieve a more natural and beautiful appearance of implants compared to the traditional approach and manual work. The CGI method shortens the time and number of visits, and eliminates the need for suturing because the gingiva is drilled at a predefined angle and depth, allowing the implant site to heal quickly.
Within our digital dental clinic we have the most modern technology on the market, such as B. DVT – 3D imaging – the most detailed and precise imaging, on the basis of which we draw up a detailed therapy plan.
Smile Dental Clinic is a Planmeca® reference center for Croatia. We take care of your health and safety by using the latest generation of Planmeca® 3D CT (CBCT) devices with extremely low radiation dose. Thanks to the Planmeca device, which provides high-quality and clear images of the jaw, making accurate diagnoses has never been easier. The ability to create a prototype of the finished work is now essential for any serious implantology clinic focused on high-quality implant placement.
Before starting the insertion, it is necessary to do a CT scan of your jaw and perform all the necessary preoperative procedures so that everything goes smoothly. The advanced technology we use contributes significantly to the success of the implantation. The use of minimally invasive methods accelerates the recovery process.
During the first examination, the current patient situation is recorded with the help of a modern Trio 3Shape intraoral scanner and the patient is photographed for therapy purposes. A special impression is taken of the ground teeth with an intraoral camera (scanner), which contains hundreds of small photos and combines them into one image using software.
The procedure is much more comfortable and faster than classic impressions with silicone materials. Temporary teeth are digitally fabricated from PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), a material hard enough to withstand the daily wear and tear of the oral cavity. The possibility of choosing a colour also fulfils the important criterion of aesthetics.
A dental laser is a device that produces light energy in a very narrow and focused beam. At the same time, the laser light, in contact with the tissue, causes a special reaction that allows the tissue to be shaped or removed. In dental or other medical applications, the dental laser is typically used to create incisions or to remove small amounts of tissue.
We also use the laser to remove caries and prepare the enamel for a filling (filling). We also often use it when shaping gums and cleaning bacteria in the root canal. Our dentists also use the laser to perform biopsies as they can take small amounts of tissue for analysis. With a laser, we can remove oral lesions and benign oral tumours and achieve pain relief from canker sores.
We use the laser to regenerate nerves and treat sleep apnea. In our polyclinic we also use it in aesthetic dentistry to whiten teeth, because the laser generates a safe amount of heat, which serves to improve the effectiveness of whitening agents. Lasers have a great advantage in osseointegration (healing of implants with bone), we also successfully use them in the treatment of peri-implantitis (inflammatory process around the implant).
The dental laser plays an important role in the daily work of the Smile Clinic, as it ensures less invasive procedures and faster recovery. This is part of our philosophy, which considers the patient’s overall well-being as part of the concern for oral health.
Digital Smile Design is one of the most modern concepts for designing and creating a smile that adapts perfectly to the shape and contours of the individual face. Thanks to the Digital Smile Design concept, a new beautiful and confident smile is the common goal of the patient and our dental experts. Digital Smile Design creates a smile tailored to your face with perfect proportions and aesthetics, i.e. a complete “smile makeover”.
Digital Smile Design simplifies and shortens the duration of the procedure and allows an accurate overview of your future smile. This is possible thanks to the computer-aided creation of a smile based on your personal characteristics.
The real task of this modern technology in the Smile Clinic is to create a smile that only belongs to you. This is possible thanks to the analysis of photos, projections of smiles, tooth and jaw relationships and plaster models available.

Digital dentistry FAQ
Digital dentistry uses devices, programs and equipment with computer components. With the help of this technology, dentists, oral surgeons and dental technicians can do their work faster and more precisely, of course all with the aim of offering patients a more pleasant, shorter and easier therapy and even better results.
Digital intraoral scanners are used to create a 3D image of the teeth and gums, which is saved as a computer file. Computer Aided Design (CAD) software allows the dentist to digitally design the dental restoration and print the finished prosthetic work on a 3D printer.
Cone beam tomography (CBCT) is a variation of conventional computed tomography (CT) systems. It captures data with a cone-shaped X-ray beam and provided much more information than traditional dental or facial X-rays.
Digital technologies that can be used in the dental clinic include: CAD/CAM, CT, digital X-ray, intraoral camera, dental laser and optical scanner.
CAD-CAM technology does not always offer a better solution than traditional restorative dentistry. Likewise, traditional dentistry is not better than CAD-CAM technology. Different techniques are suitable for different cases. It is important that you take care of your oral health and accept the appropriate treatment when recommended by a trusted professional.
The benefits of digital dentistry include:
- Dental care of highest quality
- Modern techniques and tools
- Better experience for patients and dentists
- More reliable and accurate scans
- Faster results (less time spent in the clinic)
- Ability to identify potential dental problems before they occur
