Dental crowns are state-of-the-art prosthetic solutions for people with severely damaged teeth or complete loss of one or more teeth.

Toothlessness is no longer a problem like it used to be. Materials and processes used to make crowns have never been better quality, cheaper and faster.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are among the most popular prosthetic replacement options. They are used to strengthen a damaged tooth and allow for a new permanent solution, or for purely aesthetic reasons. With dental crowns, it is important to know that their use is possible in all cases where the root of the tooth is still present and the dental crown itself has been destroyed by trauma, decay or is not aesthetically pleasing. Maybe you just don’t like the position or appearance of your healthy tooth? Dental crowns perfectly mimic the size, shape and color of a natural tooth and can be installed in two ways: by installing on a dental implant or by installing on a ground tooth.

Dental crown installation procedure

1

SCANNING AND PLANNING

During the first examination, the patient is scanned for the existing situation with a modern Trios 3Shape intraoral scanner and the photos necessary for the therapy are taken. We plan the course of therapy and predict the final results using dental photography and virtual models.

2

GRINDING AND SCANNING

This is followed by the preparation and grinding of the teeth. The impression of the ground teeth is made with an intraoral camera (scanner), which takes hundreds of small photos and combines them with the image of the patient’s mouth using software. The process is much more pleasant and faster than classic impressions with silicone materials.

This digital impression is then sent to the dental laboratory. There, our technicians design the teeth using a virtual model. The basis is the situation before grinding, photos of the patient and the wishes of the patient and doctor.

3

TEMPORARY TEETH AND IMPRESSION FOR THE FINAL WORK

As soon as the doctor starts grinding one or more teeth for the crown, the process of making temporary teeth starts. The patient leaves the clinic with provisional teeth (never without!) on the same day. The temporary teeth are digitally made out of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). The material is hard enough to withstand everyday functions in the buccal cavity. At the same time, it is aesthetically pleasing thanks to the option of choosing the right shade.

A certain amount of time must elapse before the impression for the final work is made, depending on the situation and any additional dental measures.

4

PROTOTYPE OF THE FINISHED WORK

Before the work is completed, the final testing will take place. This is done with the prototype of the tooth we want to make. The prototype is made of PMMA material and is used by the patient to see in the clinic whether the shape and aesthetics of the future teeth are satisfactory. He or she can also test how the future teeth will feel in the mouth. In this phase, the doctor checks the aesthetic and functional features of the future work and agrees with the patient whether corrections are necessary.

5

CROWN CEMENTATION

When the dental crowns are ready, they are tested first. Patient and dentist check whether they are satisfied with the work. The ceramic crowns are then cemented onto the ground teeth.

It’s time to enjoy your beautiful new smile!

Types of dental crowns

Dental crowns are made of different materials, the most common being metal ceramics and metal-free ceramics (zirconium ceramics). For the production of crowns and bridges at Smile Polyclinic we prefer to use zirconium oxide, a metal-free oxide ceramic. In other words, these are dental crowns made of zirconium ceramic or, as patients simply call them, zirconia crowns.

It is known that various metals in the buccal cavity may cause unwanted galvanic currents to appear. Therefore, modern dentistry tries to avoid the use of metallic materials as far as possible. This is not always possible and does not mean that every patient will have problems, but one would like to minimize the possibility of mucosal changes caused by said currents.

Zirconia ceramics can be made in the laboratory in full or reduced form. Different ceramic colors are added layer by layer to create a natural tooth effect. What is done depends on what is being compensated for by the crown/bridge – how many teeth and in what part of the buccal cavity.

Materials for making dental crowns

Metal-ceramic is a reliable and economical solution that has been on the market for the longest time. If everything is prepared perfectly, the result will be beautiful and durable aesthetics. Metal-ceramic crowns are made of highest quality stainless steel coated with ceramic.

They are very robust, tolerate high temperatures well and are resistant to chemical influences and corrosion. The only disadvantage of metal-ceramic crowns is their slightly poorer aesthetics. Due to the metal base, they do not possess the transparency that natural teeth have.

Today we regard zirconia crowns as the peak level of aesthetic dentistry. Works made of zirconia ceramics look completely natural, since zirconia perfectly imitates the transparency of a natural tooth. Zirconium gives the tooth a more natural look and has the great advantage that it is completely biocompatible and does not cause allergies. Zirconium ceramic is therefore an excellent alternative to metal-ceramic crowns.

We manufacture zirconia crowns ourselves in our dental laboratory using CAD-CAM technologies. This leads to a quick and very precise preparation of the crown, which is characterized by the functionality and aesthetics of a natural tooth. Zirconium-ceramic crowns are more expensive than metal-ceramic crowns, which is fully justified by the excellent combination of functionality (high strength and durability) and aesthetics (excellent transparency).

Porcelain crowns, which are made entirely of ceramic, are easier to achieve better aesthetic results and are customizable in terms of tooth color. Therefore, they represent an excellent solution if you want to achieve high-quality dental aesthetics. Due to properties such as transparency (light transmission mode), translucency (light reflection mode) and color, the untrained eye cannot distinguish an all-ceramic crown from a natural tooth.

Durability and care of porcelain teeth

The durability of work such as dental crowns, bridges or dental implants depends on several factors. These are primarily the materials from which they are made, the quality of the installation itself, as well as the expert you have entrusted to solve your problem. Of course, it is very important to draw attention to the observance of high-quality oral hygiene. If all these factors and conditions are “successfully met”, then we speak of a life period of 10 to 15 years.

PATIENTS ABOUT US

FAQ on the use of dental crowns

Dental crown candidates are people who have a tooth that is so badly damaged that the current situation cannot be corrected with a simple filling, or who have an aesthetic need to restore the full functionality of that tooth. In the case of aesthetic defects, if there is no major damage to the teeth, we recommend the use of dental veneers.

In modern dentistry we try to avoid the use of metallic materials as much as possible. Metal-free crowns (zirconium crowns) can be used for both front and back teeth. They are characterized by exceptional strength, but also superior aesthetics, as they provide transparency and a natural appearance of the teeth. Zirconium crowns are the optimal solution today because they provide an ideal combination of functionality and aesthetics.

The durability of dental crowns depends on the material from which they are made, the quality of the attachment, the expert in charge, as well as strict adherence to oral hygiene. If all these factors and conditions are met, a life period of between 10 and 15 years can be assumed.

The price of top zirconium crowns placed on a natural tooth at Smile Polyclinic is HRK 2,800.00. The price of zirconium crowns placed on a dental implant is HRK 3,000.00.
