Implant installation process from diagnosis to post-operative care

Initial examination
Your first step towards making a big change starts with making an appointment for the initial examination in our implant clinic. A detailed diagnosis is performed, which includes orthopan images and a digital CT scanner, with which we get a very accurate 3D visualization of the tooth structure, as well as the condition of the bone tissue.
With the help of a 3D printer, a dental technician produces an implant template in our laboratory so that we can ideally plan the position of the implant insertion. After the analysis and assessment of both jaws, an individual plan with the necessary intervention time and a financial construction are drawn up.

Installation of the implant
Implant placement is now a painless procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia. The implant is surgically placed in the precise location indicated by the implant template. In particular, we use a computer-guided simulation of the implant placement. The implant is placed in the bone and the process itself takes about 20 minutes, depending on the specialist performing the procedure.

Regeneration
This is followed by a period of osteointegration, a recovery process after a screw has been implanted in the jaw over a period of 3 to 6 months to allow the implant to grow into the bone. If the implant is stable and a visible part of the smile, the patient can wear a temporary crown during the regeneration period.

Healing and recovery
In order to create a secure basis for the next step, which includes the placement of the abutment, the already inserted implant or screw is of great importance. It must grow together with the bone. Here, the condition of the patient’s body plays a big role, as does compliance with the oral surgeon’s recovery instructions. If the process goes without problems and complications, the patient is ready for the next phase of therapy.

Abutment and prosthetics
The final phase of the implantation process follows the recovery phase and involves the insertion of a gingiva former whose role is to pre-shape the gums for the prosthetic replacement. After 7 to 10 days, the gingiva former is removed and an impression is taken so that a prosthetic work (crown or bridge) can be made.
We do this in collaboration with a dental technician in our state-of-the-art dental laboratory. There we plan the final appearance of the missing tooth. As son as the patient and the team responsible for creating the new smile agree, the final step and cementation takes place.

If you have been toothless for a long time, it is quite possible that there has been bone loss in the jaw. In such cases, it is necessary to perform bone augmentation (augmentation) before implantation. This is done by transplanting your own and/or artificial bone material.

FAQ regarding dental implants
The complete implantological set replaces the natural tooth completely from the root to the crown and consists of the following:
- Crown: The crown or bridge made of ceramic, zirconium or another aesthetic material is permanently placed on the prosthesis
- Abutment: It consists of titanium or zirconium and serves as a link between the implant and the prosthetic restoration (bridge or crown).
- Dental implant: In a minor surgical procedure a titanium screw is inserted into the jaw. After the implant and the bone have grown together, the implant replaces the root of the tooth.
The percentage of successful implant placement at Smile Dental Clinic is 99.4%. The usual success rate for placing implants in dentistry is around 94%.
All people who are missing at least one tooth are candidates for implant placement. The only obstacle may be the condition of the jawbones and possible chronic diseases. There are also corresponding solutions for such cases. Your dentist is the only person who can decide whether or not you are a candidate for implant placement.
After a CT scan and insight into the condition, the dentist will tell you if you can insert an implant or if the bone needs to be replaced first. In some cases even this does not help, but more precise information can only be given after the examination and the CT scan.
Older patients often think that their age could be an obstacle to implant placement. However, the most important factor is the patient’s state of health, regardless of age. If the person is healthy and can tolerate a tooth extraction, it can be assumed that the person is in good enough health to place the implant. After the examination, the dentist will tell you which treatment is ideal for your situation.
The artificial tooth on the implant takes on the role of a natural tooth. This means patients can eat and drink whatever they want. Before deciding to insert an implant, patients often feel uncomfortable and anxious. After the implantation, their self-confidence and quality of life increase significantly.

Implant placement is performed under local anaesthesia to avoid pain or discomfort. However, like any other surgery, in this case the patient may feel a little uncomfortable. Yet, most patients remain pleasantly surprised as they expected much more pain and discomfort.
